we'll bring you the latest. >> reporter: the same day that they were set to meet with the family of trayvon martin, there was a major development in the case. they are a every -- they are temporarily stepping aside. >> i standby the police department and the inrest grace that was conducted in regards to the trayvon martin case. this matter is overshadowing the process. >> reporter: it comes just one day after the city commission gave them a vote of no confidence over their handling of the martin shooting investigation. >> i'll do this in the hopes of restoring some calm to the city. it has been in turmoil for several weeks. >> reporter: they are under national scrutiny, shot and killed near their father's feeon say house last month. the neighborhood watch leader who is claiming self-defense. no charges have been filed against them, but the new evidence has come to light. the martin family said that the son was targeted because he was

black. >> what the city would want to happen more than anything else is justice. >> reporter: the u.s. department is conducting the civil rights investigation. the city manager is calling for an independent review of the police action following the shooting. >> reporter: and within the last hour, the dad spoke up about the chief's decision to temporarily step aside. >> yes, the temporary shut down. >> we wanted something for them. >> now, they also met with the justice department at the civil rights investigation. meanwhile, the florida prosecutors will be convening the grand jury next month to decide if zimmerman should be charged. >> they say you stand your ground with no duty to retreat even outside your home. but bruce leshan reports that d.c., maryland, and virginia all require you to back away if

you can. >> reporter: most states, they have laws or presidents that will say your home is your passion. >> so if you have a fear about death or injury, then you could use the deadly form with no duty to retreat. in maryland, d.c., and florida, this would likely be self- defense, but it depends. they killed that furniture delivery room in their home. the former prince george's state attorney helped send them to prison. >> we didn't see the death or harm or anything. but they will need to extend that out your door. so a reasonable fear of death or injury in florida and that it will make this self-defense. and with no duty for you to, instead, call 911, but not

necessarily in maryland, d.c., or virginia. and in florida, you do not necessarily have to retreat from the confrontation on the street. that might be different in our region. >> reporter: or if you could get away without using the deadly force, then you need to do that first. >> reporter: but how about in your car? florida and some other states, your car is also your castle. but when glenn ivy was a prosecutor, he had a different perspective. >> the ability to retreat in a car a greater than on foot. bruce leshan, 9news now. >> reporter: critics say that zimmerman not only failed to drive off, but he actually swallowed that teenager in his car, even after the police dispatcher told him to back off. new at 6:00, the barbershop bus. they say that it could be much more than the haircut if you went to the new hair shop. how about the stolen tide and the detergent or the designer jeans. police have arrested four people on theft charges or they

say that more arrests are pending, all connected to the stolen merchandise that is being sold at the barbershop valued at $125,000. >> reporter: in the back of the store beyond where they were cutting their hair, you have these elaborate severalling uniteds where you could find the stolen phones, dove body wash, the counterfeit jeans. now behind that in the back room, investigators found a locked office, filled with additional products. >> reporter: the merchandise have been stolen and they believe that some of these trucks will be shipped to illegal marketing operations overseas. >> now an update on the breaking news. a young woman is under arrest tonight in connection with the triple stabbing in the northeast. it happened around 9:30 last night near the intersection of the rhode island avenue and fourth street northeast. police say that the attack followed a fight that began on

the mcdonald's restaurant. the three women stabbed were taken to the hospital with non- life-threatening injuries. >> what is something they could not believe. >> it rocked a neighborhood in france this morning as police stormed the apartment of a man suspected of killing seven people there. now they are dead after a fierce gun battle. >> reporter: a 31-hour standoff with the murder suspect in france reached a violent end on thursday as police raided their apartments. authorities say that the suspect jumped out a window, still shooting and fell to his death. to police officers were injured in the race, which is the siege that began on early wednesday

morning. and that is the 23-year-old who was wanted in the killing of the jewish schools. authorities say that they told police that he trained with al qaeda in pakistan and they had planned to attack more soldiers on wednesday. he claims to belong to al qaeda, wanding revenge for the palestinian children. he also wanted to take revenge on the french army because of the foreign interventions. >> reporter: after the standoff, the french prison called for a unit. >> today the french people had to overcome the view where they should not give a free range to the anger. and the muslim views, they are in no way involved with the terrorist group. >> reporter: he also strongly affirmed that the extremists of any kind would face the prosecution. >> the u.s. officials say that they were on the u.s. no fly

they all said they would stop selling the product. >> pink slime is on the way out. with all the traffic gridlock, political battles, frustrations with metro. you would think that people here in d.c. would be pretty stressed out. but a new study says that's not the case. sterling was ranked the 50 most stressed metro areas. the research and publishing group used unemployment data, commuter time, as well as divorce and crime rates to come up with this list and d.c. in this case will come out towards the bottom. 44th to be exact. the most stressed out city according to this, tampa followed by las vegas and miami. >> really? well, it this next story is

important for people looking to buy a home. according to freddie mac, the average interest rate for a 30- year fixed rate mortgage rose to 6.8%. rates will be above 4%. still very low. the average for a 15-year mortgage jumped as well and it is now 3.3%. up next, the video outburst in the college classroom that will be going viral. so now what did you do if it happens to you? experts will be weighing in. but first here is a quick preview of tonight's cbs news. we have learned that the massacre in afghanistan t will be worse than what we knew and charges are next against the u.s. soldier. that story is tonight on the cbs evening news.

theory. so now what he is doing at the middle school in d.c.? inspiring young minds. he engaged in a nationwide effort aimed at getting more kids interested in careers of science, math, engineering. all to look at the shortage of students that are now choosing the career path. tonight, a viral video from the florida university, they have people here in d.c. wondering. if our area colleges are prepared for the outburst that border on the emergencies. >> reporter: i'm matt jablo. it happened without warning or problem case during the evolution -- publication during the evolution. there they are talking about peacocks. the woman started asking how that killed off black people. >> reporter: a four-minute long tirade. during which a young woman threatened to kill her

professor and several classmates. >> obviously that woman was in crisis. >> ed clark, the former head of security at the montgomery county school district said that the incident points out how much work still needs to be done in some universities to prepare teachers and students for emergency situations. >> too much time did elapse before someone did something to get help or get control of that situation. >> reporter: matt jablo, 9news now. >> the battle over the budget might be over. they are expected to vote on monday. now that's something that senators were not able to do during the regular session. the proposal incorporates some of the demands and the democrats that held up the previous budgets earlier this month. and that will happen in virginia next year. the republican attorney general, they officially filed today to create the campaign committee. they said that they are running to continue the work that they started as the attorney general to strengthen the economy and preserve liberty and promote

smaller governments. >> representatives voted today and that the bill would repeal the independent payment advisory board. the senate will be expected to kill the bill and, of course, the whole health care plan hits the supreme court next week. and remember these numbers, 667. no, nothing to do with winning the lottery. maryland is getting a new 667 area code. new phone customers in central maryland and the eastern shore may get the new area code. customers with the existing 410 and 443 numbers will not be affected. the existing area codes are likely to be exhausted soon. 100 years ago next monday, 3,020 cherry trees arrived right here in d.c. they were a gift from the people of japan to the people of the united states. as we know that gift has blossomed, literally into the national cherry blossom festival. in fact this year's festival

just started on tuesday. well to mark the 100th anniversary, it will run for five weeks instead of the usual two. and today the ambassador from japan pointed out that many of those original trees were from 1912 and they still thrive here at the title basin. >> 100 trees still remain from 100 years ago. and this is not usual. this is not a miracle too. it's because of the very hard work of national park services and all people. >> the cherry blossoms look good for their age. the special performances will be taking place during the festival and the japanese garden will be planted at the title basin and japan will distribute even more cherry trees to cities all across the united states so it's a big deal. >> i'll need to get the kids down there this weekend. >> yeah. not so much. >> will there be blossoms after this weekend? >> there will be. the cherry blossoms in japan

are blooming late because of a cold winter. >> not so here. >> we had no wind here this week. we tried to cooperate, you know, and take care of the blossoms. but this weekend is going to be a little unsettling as the showers and thunderstorms approach. let's start with a live look outside. the live weather cam that is brought to you by michael and son and take a look at this. still at 76 downtown. the winds are light out of the south at 7. and the pressure is falling over the past hour. 37.9 inches of mercury. dew points in the 60s. which means it will be a very warm night. satellite picture, radar combined. well, here is the area of low pressure that will be sitting and spinning. it has not moved much. the area of showers and thunderstorms moved a little further east. but normally you'll get something, you know, in the southern plain states to the west and the east coast in about 30 hours. well, not the case for this one. probably take until saturday to get that front here and probably take until sunday night to get everything on out of here. right now the big-time storms in alabama and central tennessee around nashville. almost over here.

as you know you start to enter the tennessee valley. these storms could be kind of hefty here as we get into friday night. and it did not look as bad as it did this time yesterday. right now generally clear skies. all the showers are along the virginia, west virginia border. i think that they will be staying west of i-81 tonight. we're looking at temperatures that are still 81 in rockville. 77 in bethesda. 77 in arlington and 79 in college park and upper 70s for you in reston. it's like a time warp here. these will be fantastic numbers for late april or even quite frankly late may. all right, even warmer tomorrow. more fog for you late tonight and some fog early on friday. warmer on friday. maybe a thunderstorm late. and then an unsettled weekend and a little cooler for you. saturday will be the warmer of the two days. probably the drier of the two days too. partly to mostly cloudy tonight. warm isolated storms will be possible. yes, fog will return with the lows 56 to about 62 and with light winds. tomorrow morning, reporting

lightly cloudy. 70s before lunchtime. winds are easterly at 10 and by afternoon, partly cloudy, warmer. isolated shower or thunderstorm will be possible. high temperatures around 80. and in fact i think that many areas will top out in the lower 80s on friday. next seven days, again cooler on saturday or not as warm anyway. temperatures are around 70 with scattered showers and thunderstorms. in the 60s on sunday for you. it's not going to rain continuously for the two days. you'll be able to do some things over the weekend. then cooler next week, but right there and nice and brisk. 60 on monday and the upper 60s on tuesday and back in the upper 60s on wednesday and thursday. >> that will be a reality check. >> yes, almost affecting late march. >> yes, finally. the nfl handed out their punishment, but now the u.s. senate is getting involved in bounty gates. they are forming a committee to examine the scheme and determine if they should be considered a crime. they call the bounty system a disturbing practice and they will be focusing on not just football, but representatives from all the major sports to testify once the hearing has been scheduled, which could be in about two to three weeks. the league closed their investigation into the redskins involvement without punishment, but could it have been a little premature? in an article out today written by the jfk blogger, the former players described instances when greg williams walked into the locker room with wads of cash, urging the team to knock certain opponents out of the game. and today was andrew luck's turn in the spotlight. the redskins all looked on as luck showed off his throwing skills for about 30 minutes during the pro day.

it was windy, but still impressed, completing about 92% of his passes. now during this time in recent seasons, the washington capitals have either locked up in the playoff spot or they have been real close to doing so. but they are struggling this year and it has been sitting in the 8th and final spot with nine games left to go. as they close out the current road trips tonight, they will most likely be down a man. alexander simmons sat out at practice yesterday and dipped this morning's view. trying to recover from a lower body injury. he was not too certain that he would be suiting up tonight to face philadelphia. as opening day just closed for baseball, it looks like the outfielder will not be ready to go because of a lack in the injuries. now, they said that he recently received a plasma injection to help speed up that recovery. time to vote in this week's high school game of the week. and the poll a-- amonoyour choices here going for baseball as well and others. here are your choices.
